Resume Writing Tips
- Try not to send a standard resume to all employers.
It maybe easier to prepare 1 standard resume and send it to all employers, but that
never works.
- It’s important to study each employer’s needs carefully
and customise the resume accordingly. No doubt it is more work, but it works.
- Always avoid spelling and grammatical errors. Try
and get someone to proof read your resume. Employers take this very seriously.
- Keep it simple precise. Elaborate where needed.
- Keep it neat and well organised.
- Remember, employers are busy people. They receive
hundreds of resumes but only have few seconds to glance through before they make
up their mind. Therefore your resume should tell an employer how you ft into their
needs. This will be possible if you:
-
Carefully study employer’s needs before preparing your
resume. This is the first step. Ask yourself : What are their needs? What kind of
educational background, skills and working experiences do they require?
-
Then ask yourself: What do I have to offer? Take the
time to think about all your assets: your experiences, achievements, education,
skills and knowledge.
-
Finally prepare a resume that shows an employer how you fit into their needs.
- Be specific where possible (instead of saying, “was
responsible for sales of product A”, and say “sold 20,000 units of product A (worth
8 million dollars) in one year”.
- Be sure to mention your responsibilities, but elaborate
more on those responsibilities that your have excelled in. In other words, highlight
what you have done and accomplished and have exceeded.
- All irrelevant information should not be included.
It’s counter-productive.
